Global Warming

Global Warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of Earth’s near surface air and oceans since the mid 20th century.

Greenhouse gases are any of the atmospheric gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation produced by solar warming of the Earth’s surface. Greenhouse gases have been increasing over the years, mostly carbon dioxide due to combustion of coal, oil, and gases. Water Vapor is the largest source of greenhouse gas, followed by carbon dioxide and other trace gases. Though many people believe greenhouse gases are bad it’s the exact opposite. Without greenhouse gases on Earth the temperature would be about zero degrees F.Thus, the real concern is not whether there are greenhouse gases, but if humans are increasing the gases at a deadly rate.

The world’s glaciers have been melting at an increasingly stunning rate. Researchers believe that this is caused by rapid industrialization which in turn is one of the major causes of global warming. One of the major concerns of the glaciers melting is that they will raise the water level in rivers and streams, thus causing widespread flooding. Montana’s Glacier National Park now only has 27 glaciers compared to it’s 150 in the year 1910.

The global mean sea level has been rising at a steady rate of 1.7 mm per year over the past hundred years. The increase in water is mostly due to the Alpine Glaciers melting. The water rising is due to just one set of glaciers, imagine what would happen if they all contributed to one area.

Global warming and the energy crisis are both linked together very closely. They both are related through the burning of fossil fuels. In order to slow both the process of losing energy and the process of the Earth becoming warmer we must find an alternative fuel source. Energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines are the perfect example of some alternative energy sources. Fossil fuels are currently providing more than 85% of all the energy consumed in the United States.

Things that individuals can do in order to slow global warming and help save the Earth involve taking showers, not baths. Use less hot water, buy fresh foods instead of frozen, start a car pool to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide put into the air, you could even do something as simple as replacing a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb.

However, one might see the problem like this; If we run out of an energy source our emmisions causing global warming will be limited. Thus if we find an alternative fuel source global warming will fix itself on its own! Our focus should be directed towards finding an alternative fuel source, and fast.
